Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

What is DC: AoR?

Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a live-action series which serves as a prequel to Jim Henson’s cult classic dark fantasy film The Dark Crystal, about a young Gelfling man who sets out on a quest to reunite the Dark Crystal with its missing shard and save the world of Thra from the evil Skeksis.

The film is free to watch on YouTube (with ads) at the moment if you have never heard of the franchise and want some context:

The series revolves around a group of Gelfling who uncover a horrifying secret behind their “trusted overlords” that threatens all life on Thra.

Season 1 has 10 episodes and while a second season was planned, Netflix unexpectedly canceled the series, details of which can be explained here:

This series of posts will focus on the connections between the events depicted in Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and what is happening in the United States and the world today. There are three main plot threads that run throughout Age of Resistance:

  • The Skeksis, realizing that the Crystal is failing, seek to extend their already long lives into eternity even at the expense of those they rule over.
  • The seven Gelfling clans have been placed into a hierarchy and segregated from each other, sowing distrust and prejudice.
  • The Crystal’s corruption (caused by the Skeksis’ centuries of abusing it) causes it to emit an energy that is extremely damaging to all organic life on Thra.

How They Relate to Real Life:

  • The “elites” seek to extend their already long lives so they can enjoy their power and prestige forever and avoid the afterlife and its consequences.
  • Humanity, especially Americans, are so divided along whatever line of identity they carry that they don’t notice the game they’re all playing on us.
  • The actions of the powerful are poisoning our waters, soils, air, and damaging our health and that of our great Mother Earth.

Here, I will provide analysis of each episode and how it connects to everything we’re dealing with in our world today.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance series is only available in its full glory on Netflix (it’s actually the only reason I got myself a Netflix subscription). I am aware of some of Netflix’s more problematic aspects (looking at you, Cuties), so if you don’t want to get Netflix or you no longer have a subscription, I completely understand.

I also want to say for legal purposes that I don’t want to encourage pirating or torrenting of copyrighted content, so either watch it on Netflix or if not, here are some playlists of YouTubers reacting to and reviewing the series:
